Description

Located on the outskirts of this pretty coastal village, just a short stroll to Embleton beach, The Lodge is an independent wing of an early 20th century country house which has been lovingly refurbished by its owner, Anne, who taking inspiration from the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh has styled this couple's Retreat in homage to the Glasgow Style.

2024 is a year of Celebrations at The Lodge@Shirewater as the house is 100 years old as well as it being 15 years in April since Anne first started letting it out. Any new bookings with an arrival date in 2024 will benefit from special price reductions to celebrate.

The Lodge is a peaceful haven for a couple looking to relax, take strolls around the extensive five-acre grounds of river, orchard and woodland or wander down to the white sands of Embleton Bay. Arriving to freshly baked bread, this property is romantic and inspiring, there are walks along the river and through the woodland and orchard at this 20th Century art nouveau era country house with its clever blend of contemporary wallcoverings, beautiful fabrics, quirky items, oak and painted furniture, relaxing colours and up to the minute kitchen and bathrooms - all of which would not look out of place on the pages of household interior magazines. Spend the evenings on the decked area outside the cottage enjoying some freshly cooked produce from the garden, which is complimentary for guests, or snuggle up in the spacious lounge with its stylish log burner. CANDID COMMENTS

Almost perfect!

The Lodge is attached to the owner's house but privacy should not be an issue, although you may see the owner walking past to the greenhouse occasionally! Mobile reception can be erratic at the Lodge and in Embleton generally, but there is a landline phone.

TO NOTE

Whilst we take great care to represent our properties and their facilities as accurately as possible, the décor, furnishings and facilities shown in images and video tours may occasionally be subject to minor change.

Really only suitable for a babe in arms, but The Lodge has played host to a few toddlers too.

Reviews

The Cottage is very well equipped with everything you need. It is comfortable and relaxing in an excellent location.

Mr C,

Absolutely fabulous. Really enjoyed staying at Shirewater.

Mrs H,

A lovely, quiet and very roomy lodge in a nice location and close to a lovely little village. Also very close to a number of Northumberland's tourist locations. Very friendly and helpful owners with an equally friendly dog.

Mr G,

Perfect holiday cottage. Friendly and helpful hosts who thought of everything. Special touches included arriving to the smell of delicious home baked bread and a very good welcome hamper including Lodge at Shirewater own label tea and coffee. Spotlessly clean, luxurious accommodation including confortable, extra wide bed, two large bathrooms (one each!), large sitting room and very well equipped kitchen, entrance porch and rear patio doors leading to outdoor seating area and the owners' wonderful and extensive garden which we were free to explore. Sea views from the bedroom and sitting room. Easy access to the coast path for good walks and a short drive to Northumberland's many attractions. An ideal location for peace and quiet.

Mrs R,

A wonderful property. The bed is so comfortable and the welcome pack and freshly baked bread was super. Anne and Peter have gone out of their way to think of everything and to make The Lodge a special place to stay. We loved being visited by Danny their dog and picking some plums in the orchard. The birds in the trees surrounding the property and the deer in the field behind the house as well as the distant views of the sea make this a truly fabulous place to stay. We hope to return

Mrs R,

We can't think of any extra praise to that already shared in the many other 5 star reviews but just to add we found them all to be well deserved. This really is a perfect place to stay and we had a lovely holiday. Many thanks.

Mrs B,

Lovely cottage with views from the bedroom out to sea. Very well equipped with a fresh loaf of bread on our arrival and a generous welcome pack. Great location only a 5 minute walk from the village which has three pub/bars a village shop and a garage. Bus service for the area was fantastic. Nearest bus stop only 5 minutes walk away from the front door. Walks can be done north to Beadnell or south to Craster via Dunstanburgh castle (which is well worth a visit) Alnwick castle and gardens, Bamburgh and the holy island all within easy reach. Wonderful relaxing week. Thank you

Mr P,

The beautifully realised Lodge provided us with a most relaxing week in Northumberland. We enjoyed the generous welcome basket and freshly baked bread, with a special mention for the neighbour’s eggs and the coffee. The latter was so good that we detoured on the way home to call in at Pumphreys and buy some for home use. We recommend the walk to Embleton Bay and also Etal and Chillingham Castles. But the Lodge makes a great centre for seeing most that Northumberland has to offer.

Mr B,

Wonderful property, looking forward to our third visit later this year.

Mrs W,

Comfortable property, ideal for a couple. Quiet location, but convenient for the village of Embleton and the Northumberland coast. Helpful owners. Always enjoy the homemade bread.

Mr G,

Wonderful cottage.

Mr F,

This place is a real gem in every way. The property is in a perfect location, quiet, peaceful, close to nature (you'll probably have a close encounter with a hare during your stay - he 'mows' the grass island in front of the kitchen) and only 5 minutes' walk to the three pubs (the Dunstanburgh Castel Hotel has a great beer garden) and excellent shop (post office/farm shop/delicatessen/general store). The walk into Embleton is down a quiet road where drivers take care approaching walkers and cyclists. You can be on Embleton beach (which is lovely) after a 25-minute walk or, via Dunstan Steads, it's an easy walk to Dunstanburgh Castle (about 45 minutes). The property is immaculately clean and beautifully furnished and equipped with great inside and outside space. You also have access to the owners' wonderful gardens. This must be one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on and having two full bathrooms is a real touch of luxury. A generous welcome hamper greets you as does a freshly baked loaf in the bread-maker. There are maps, guides, books on local interest, fiction, DVDs, CDs, games etc - you couldn't be better provided for. Owners (and Danny the golden retriever) make you very welcome and are on hand if you need them. Embleton itself is well located for access to all the local points of interest. One of the best places we've stayed, and we intend to return at the first opportunity.

Dr J,

Superbly appointed, nothing was skimped on much better equipped with all kitchens and bathroom basics supplied than many of other cottages we've stayed in and owners lovely and helpful, heartily recommend as a base for exploring the area

Mr R,

Loved the accommodation. Provided with all you could want and extras like the bread, wine and eggs. Did find the chair in the living room a challenge to get out of. But very comfy. Bed was fantastic. Thanks for a wonderful stay. Anne and husband were lovely.

Ms C,

One of the best cottages we have stayed in. Well equipped, clean and roomy for 2 people. A delightful wellcome pack waiting for us when we arrived. The cottage is in a very good position to explore the coastline particularly: can walk to the beach in 15 minutes. Would go there again.

Mr C,

Comfortable, cottage in a quiet location, just outside Embleton. Good village farm shop. About a mile or so to Embleton Bay, either through the village to Dunstanburgh Golf Club or down to Dunstan Steads; Craster village a bit further.. Friendly and helpful owners.

Mr G,

What a special place Shirewater is. A very warm welcome from Anne and Peter. Walking into the smell of freshly baking bread in the kitchen was the perfect start. The food hamper was beautiful. Don’t miss out on Tilda’s eggs from the hens next door. The lodge has everything you could wish for. It was immaculately clean ( and I am very fussy!). The super king bed was incredibly comfortable and sitting in bed with a morning cuppa looking at the distant sea view was lovely. The roll top bath in the en-suite was perfect after miles of walking on the nearby beaches and coast paths. Shirewater is a little slice of heaven. The orchard was not only bursting with the juiciest plums but masses of butterflies! The heron was fishing on the lake and the grounds are simply beautiful. Expertly landscaped to make the most of the natural environment. What an absolutely wonderful time we had. We shall be back without doubt.

Mrs A,

This is a beautiful place. We had a great week exploring the area. The owners were so friendly and welcoming. The goodies hamper and loaf of freshly baked bread in the bread machine were delightful. Absolutely nothing negative to say!

Mrs S,

The property is ideally located to enjoy Northumberland. You can walk down to Embleton beach and enjoy a walk along the coastal path. Easy to drive to other locations as well. A mix of castles, beaches and walks. The property itself has a lovely layout with an open kitchen area, dining table, comfortable chairs and a TV (make smart by an Amazon Firestick) and DVD player. Games, books and advice on what to do in the area (it's all there). Really enjoyable stay and the owners are really friendly and helpful.

Mr H,

A quiet location with a delightful garden which we were at liberty to explore. The lodge is spacious, very clean, light and bright and beautifully decorated. Our hosts were welcoming, helpful and lovely to talk to. We appreciated the generous hamper of good quality food which we found on arrival.

Mr G,

The property was excellently presented and we received a warm welcome (including some lovely goodies). We would highly recommend.

Mrs Angela M,

Accommodation was excellent. Very clean and well looked after. everything you needed was there. the Owners next door extremely welcoming and friendly. No hesitation in recommending the Lodge to our friends.

Mr Colin M,

This was our fourth visit to this property and it did not disappoint

Mr L,

Location

On the outskirts of Embleton village, in a quiet location adjoining its owners' large country house. Within walking distance of Eleanor's Byre for delicious cappuccinos and a browse through some of the upmarket gifts/accessories in the little emporium. Walk in the other direction and you have a couple of pubs, Greys Inn and The Dunstanburgh Castle Inn, plus a small Italian bistro for good food, two little village shops (including a Post Office), a play park and the golf club at your disposal. The beautiful white sands of Embleton Bay are a little further with the atmospheric ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle on the headland.

For further information on the area, see our Craster and Embleton section.
