Things to Do in the Area
The beach in Berwick upon Tweed is a large, sandy beach north of the river Tweed. A favoured fishing spot by locals, the beach is also a popular spot for walks and dogs are welcome all year round. From the beach, you can also access the Berwickshire Coastal Path, which follows a route that takes you over the border into Scotland. Our cottages in Berwick are just a stone's-throw from this fabulous beach, so you can explore all it has to offer day after day.
In Berwick town centre you can discover its fascinating history by exploring the Elizabethan walls. The walls still stand complete today and were originally built in 1558 by order of the Queen to prevent invading Scots from getting in, who had been competing with the English for the town for years. Visiting the walls is free and the site is pet-friendly and wheelchair accessible.
Today, the walls are also part of the very popular LS Lowry trail. The walking trail takes around three hours and takes you right across Berwick as you look out for a collection of panels which reproduce the famous artists’ sketches that he made whilst holidaying in Berwick. Made famous by his portraits of industrial northern life, you may recognise Lowry’s work by his stylised ‘matchstick men’ which were featured in many of his works.
