Walks from our Retreats – The Lowry Trail

June: The Lowry Trail from Waterfront

Painter LS Lowry holidayed in Berwick upon Tweed from the mid 1930s until the 1970s when he died. He was captivated by the town and its sea views. Those very views are what bring guests back time and again to our Waterfront Retreat on Pier Road. Lowry himself walked down this very street and you can pick up the trail, which showcases many of the sites of his famous paintings, from outside of Waterfront.

Trail highlights

  1. The Pier. Leave Waterfront and head out towards the sea. Berwick Lighthouse is spectacular in any weather and you can enjoy a morning walk on the beach, taking in some of those scenes Lowry enjoyed, before heading into the town.
  2. The cobbled streets of Sally Port, Dewar’s Lane and Strother’s Yard.
  3. The Elizabethan walls. These walls encircle the town and take around 45 minutes to walk. They are the only example of bastioned town walls in Britain and offer some stunning views of the town and its sandy beaches and Tweed estuary.
  4. Berwick’s Georgian Town Hall with its 150ft steeple.
  5. Crossing the River Tweed via Berwick Bridge at Bridge End with the Royal Tweed Bridge and the Royal Border Bridge visible to the east.
  6. Spittal Beach. Time your walk so you arrive here after lunch so you can relax and enjoy the coastal views.

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants along this route, so if you need to stop off you can. Alternatively, you can break the trail into two parts and walk around the town the first day and then head across the bridge to the harbour and beach on another outing.
