Planning a staycation with a young baby in tow? How to make the most of a holiday as a new parent
Published: Friday 23rd Mar 2018
Those first few months as a first-time parent are one of the best times to enjoy a break not too far from home. It can be an overwhelming time adjusting to life as a family of three instead of two, which is all the more reason to carve a little bit of time away from a house full of nappies, interrupted nights and friends and family all dropping in to see the new arrival.
A short break at a holiday cottage offers two valuable things to new parents: you still have the space and comforts of a home but without the regular chores, and the change of scenery offered by a three or four night getaway will certainly make you feel revitalised. Plus, a staycation is ideal as there’s no airport to navigate and it’s the perfect time to treat yourself before you have a demanding toddler on your hands.
Go for a calm escape but not too far from civilisation
While the idea of being at a remote cottage may appeal, especially if you are feeling a little tired or stressed, this is not the time to hole up somewhere without mobile signal or a long drive to the nearest shop. Holidaying with a baby is best if everything is accessible, but you can still find some peace and quiet if you want. Choose somewhere like Bamburgh or Craster where you can strap baby into the carrier and take some walks along the Northumberland coast with a pub stop along the way. Both these villages have places to eat and stores for provisions, but are also a short drive from the larger hubs of Alnwick and Seahouses if you run out of nappies!
Pick somewhere a little bit special
Celebrate your baby’s arrival, and becoming new parents, by booking a break where you’ll leave feeling that you’ve had a treat. A big comfy bed, cosy log burner and some to die for views will certainly restore your energy levels.
Make sure some baby equipment is provided
You certainly don’t want to have to haul all the baby paraphernalia with you on a short break. Cots and high chairs are provided at all our Retreats so you can leave the bulky baby equipment at home.
Make memories
It is a cliche, but it is definitely true that you will never get to enjoy those early weeks and months with your child again. So make first holiday memories with your baby. Take your own photos or book a professional photographer to take some family shots while you are away. They’ll make great presents for grandparents at Christmas.
