Best Retreats for Food Lovers

Some of our best places to be together and enjoy some fabulous dining out experiences at the same time.

Berwick-upon-Tweed

Stay at Waterfront and dine at The Magna Tandoori, voted one of the best places for curry in the UK. Or head a little further south to the Barn at Beal. The location of this cafe and restaurant is unparalleled – it has fantastic views of Holy Island and is just situated before the start of the causeway.

Seahouses

Be spoilt for choice at this active fishing village where traditional seaside fish and chips are not the only dining choice on the menu. Elan Pizzeria, The Spice House and The Indian Brasserie, all in Main Street, are great eating out options if you don’t fancy anything battered. The Olde Ship Inn, whose beer garden overlooks the harbour, is one of our favourites for a real pub experience with homemade food and hundreds of whisky blends. For fish and chips, we’d join the Hairy Bikers in recommending Pinnacles, also in Main Street.

Sweet treats don’t get better than Coxon’s icecreams and if you’re dining in, take a trip to Swallow Fish, a traditional smokery which has operated in this part of South Street since 1843. Pick up shellfish, fresh fish caught daily, smoked salmon and kippers.

Stay at Seafarer’s, The Beach Pad, Salt Air or Bluegrass.

Craster

At Craster’s heart is The Jolly Fisherman, a gastro pub with fantastic sea views and gorgeous crab sandwiches. The owners also have the Shoreline Café across the road for lighter meals and sweet treats. Their homemade carrot, parsnip or pumpkin cakes are well worth a try. Akin to Seahouses, Craster is also home to a smokery, Robson’s, where you can buy the famous Craster kippers from the shop in the Smokehouse or dine in its seafood restaurant, The Craster Fish Restaurant.

Stay at Craster Retreat, Craster Rocks, Craster Waves, Coastguard’s Cottage, Harbour Master’s House, The Old Ale House or The Old Gardener’s.

Bamburgh

Stay at Bamburgh Six, Bamburgh Five or North Star House and be in walking distance of numerous excellent restaurants. Baileys Bar & Restaurant at the Victoria Hotel and The Potted Lobster are all excellent choices. For great sausages for your beach barbecue head straight to R Carter & Son butchers for their bestselling Bamburgh Bangers and legendary sausage rolls.

Beadnell

Our Beadnell favourites are Box for wood-fired pizza and brunches served in a converted shipping container with a view of the coast and Saltwater Cafe in the centre of Beadnell, which is a cafe by day and a bistro by night.
